Obertura, the first movement of Suite Mestiza, brings together sounds evoking the ancestral cultures of the Americas, elements of Colombian traditional music, and the symphonic tradition. Its musical materials interact, intertwine, and contrast, reflecting the processes of cultural mixing, syncretism, and hybridization that have shaped Latin America’s diversity.
In just over six minutes, the work unfolds in three main sections. The first opens with a xylophone introduction, followed by agile ascending gestures in the winds—a call leading to the principal theme: a pentatonic melody presented by the clarinets in a chorale texture, symbolizing the mestizo identity. The second section introduces a melody inspired by singing traditions of the Colombian-Ecuadorian Amazon, shaped by missionary influences and organized into four-line stanzas. This melody travels through different instrumental sections, interwoven with gestures drawn from bullerengue, cumbia, and porro, modal transformations, and a gradual orchestral buildup. In the third section, the principal theme returns, accompanied by spirited, Caribbean-inspired improvised countermelodies. Renewed calls lead to its final statement in a new key and the concluding coda.
Obertura celebrates Latin American mestizaje as a creative and transformative force, an identity continually taking shape. As a ritual of opening, it invites us to imagine worlds in which our dreams, thoughts, and ideas may come to life. This version is based on Obertura mestiza, composed for the National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia and its conductor, Yeruham Sharovsky, for their 2024 Latin American tour.
